In the world of beauty and cosmetics, first impressions matter and that’s where stunning creative photography steps in. We were approach by OPI to create some captivating cosmetic photography with their nail varnish products and we delivered! Still life product photography combined with beautiful hand models produced lifestyle and gifting  photography that resonate across the various marketing platforms, from pr, social media websites and e-commerce. Heres a few tips on how we created it.

Choose Your Background Wisely

The background is crucial for cosmetic photography. For this shoot a clean, uncluttered background allowed the vibrant colours of the nail varnish to take center stage. Soft pastels and a minimalist off-white created the chic aesthetic we were looking for, We also used colours that were close to product or packaging as the lighting would help provide the separation. It was important the background could be extended to fit various formats  so a clean single tone background was the requirement.

Photography Props that compliment

We integrated props that embody the themes of beauty and luxury. Flowers, ribbons, glitter, plinths, and a touch of minimal jewellery, along with the hand model, enhanced the lifestyle gifting narrative, allowing customers to envision how the product seamlessly fits into their lives.

Still life Lighting is Key

Producing a natural lighting style is often the best choice for cosmetic photography. It brings out the true colours and textures of the varnish and the models hands making them look more appealing. A soft, diffused light allowed for the bright vibrant colour to look realistic.  

Hand Models: Adding a Personal Touch

Using a professional hand model adds a dynamic element to still life photography. Hands can convey emotion and lifestyle, making the products feel more relatable. When shooting with models, always ensure a well manicured hand. For this shoot we had a fantastic hand model from Hired Hands, plus a great nail technician as it was a vital part of the shoot. We encouraged natural poses, whether it's a relaxed grip on the bottle or a playful application of the varnish, candid moments can tell a story. Composition & Style 

We added depth to several images by strategically layering elements such as flowers. By positioning the varnish bottles at varying heights, we created a sense of dimension that draws the viewer's eye. Additionally, we incorporated dynamic elements like glitter, capturing its movement to infuse the photography with energy and vibrancy. This combination not only enhances the visual appeal but also brings a lively, engaging quality to the overall composition.

Gifting Concepts

As gifting was a key factor of the products we added the elements into the photography. Our aim was to showcase OPI nail varnish products in beautifully wrapped gift boxes or styled alongside complementary styles. This not only promotes the products but also inspires customers to envision them as perfect gifts.
